Airtel
To set a 'Hello Tune', just call 678 and follow the instructions. If you want to copy someone else's caller tune, call 678 and go to the copy caller tune menu and key in that persons mobile number. You can also gift a 'Hello Tune'. Call 678 and follow the voice instructions (you're charged the first month and thereafter the other person is charged). But the best part about Airtel is the song catcher. If you hear something you like–could be anything; audio in a movie theatre, a song playing in an autorickshaw or your mother-in-law screaming in the background–you can record it and use it. Just dial 393 from your Airtel phone and hold the phone near the source for 20 seconds. Hello Tunes is Rs 30 per month as subscription charges, Rs 6 per minute to call 678 (Rs 3 per minute for North-East, Mumbai, Gujarat & Delhi).

Hutch
Hutch 'CallerTunes' can be activated by calling 123 from saying 'CallerTunes'. They have all sounds of tunes; Bollywood, International, funny sounds and even instrumental music. You can either have one common tune for all callers or set individual tones for certain callers (charge extra). You can also activate by SMS; just send 'ACT CT' as an SMS to 123. It costs Rs 30 per month as subscription charges, Rs 6 per minute to call 123 and as Rs 15 per song (valid for 3 months). If you hear a caller tune you like, you can simply press '*' when you hear it playing to copy it. Hutch also has something unique-cricket caller tunes. On match days, callers can hear the latest scores when they call you.

Idea
Idea's 'Dialer Tones' can be activated by calling 456 and following the voice instructions. You can also set a tone through SMS. Just visit the Idea website, go to the 'Dialer Tones' section and get the code of the song you want. Then SMS 'DT' followed by the code and SMS it to 456. You can search via SMS too-SMS 'DT GET' to 456 and you'll get a list (Rs 3 per each SMS to 456). They also have the tune copy feature that Hutch has: just press '*' to copy a tune that you hear. They charge Rs 30 per month for subscription, Rs 6.50 per minute to call 456 and Rs 10 per song selection (without recurring costs).

Reliance
Reliance has the most options to set caller tones. You can activate Reliance 'My Tunes' by calling 51234 and saying 'My Tunes'. If you prefer, you can SMS 'MT' followed by the song code to 1234 (a complete list of codes for each song is available on the Reliance website). Then you have the option of getting codes through online partners like Rediff. Finally, you can set your own tone through Reliance Mobile World, right on your phone. They charge Rs 30 per month as subscription, Rs 6 per minute to call 51234 and Rs 3 per SMS sent to 1234.
