Soaring Expectations

Can a phone with a proprietary OS really do everything that a smartphone can? Samsung says yes, with the Jet

It takes quite a bit of doing to displace the smartphone biggies, but Samsung is pinning hopes on the Jet, which they call 'smarter than a smartphone'. Barring the proprietary OS, it has several features which you expect to find in a smartphone; task manager, multiple home screens with customization, online widgets which you can drag and drop onto the home screen and add-on software. You get animated menu screens and a beautiful, crisp 3.1-inch, high resolution AMOLED touchscreen; most definitely the highlight of this phone.

There is a slight nod to the iPhone with the Jet's design and interface. The menu and user interface is designed to be operated by your finger, so no stylus is necessary (or provided). The Media Gate 3D interface is accessed via a button on the side, and allows quick access to certain programs and features. You also get single button home screen access. On top of the device, you'll find the 3.5mm audio out and a microUSB port under a flap.

There is some pretty innovative use of the built-in accelerometer. The Jet mutes an active call when placed face down on a table and turns on the speakerphone when placed on the table facing upwards. The 5 MP camera is neat (but no Xenon flash) and video is recorded at 720 x 480 pixels @ 30 fps.

Quad band GSM with EDGE & 3G, 3.1-inch 800 x 480 AMOLED touchscreen, 800Mhz processor, FM, 5MP camera, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, DivX, 1080mAh Li-ion battery, 110 grams

Verdict

The size of the phone feels nice and build quality is superb. I only wish they hadn't used so much glossy black plastic. All surfaces are complete fingerprint magnets. But perhaps the biggest downside is the lack of independently developed apps. Despite that, I'd still prefer this over the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music.
