A merica now has its 44th President. And continuing a tradition that's almost
as old as the automobile itself, President Barack Obama will cruise in an
all-new Cadillac Presidential Limousine.
The completely redesigned limo replaces the Cadillac DTS Presidential
Limousine introduced in 2004 and while official details of the car's drivetrain,
on-board tech and armored capabilities of course remain top secret, we do know a
little bit about it. So which Cadillac is it, you ask? It's like nothing else on
Earth-a complete custom, which picks up parts and components from across the
entire Cadillac range. The chassis might actually be based on the GMC Topkick
truck, because they knew that with all the security, it was going to be heavy!
It's been described by some as a 'tank on wheels'. To give you an idea of how
heavy it may be, the 6500cc diesel engine will endow it with a top speed of
about 100kmph.
It's equipped with five-inch thick bulletproof glass all around and high
strength ceramic armor on every body panel. The only window that opens is the
driver's window, and that too only by 3-inches. Just to enable the driver to
talk to someone outside. Rockets, armor-piercing missiles, mines; they'll all
fall by the wayside. Everything is sealed too, so the occupant can withstand a
chemical attack. The tyres are kevlar reinforced, shred and puncture-resistant
with steel rims specially designed to allow the car to get away at high speed
even if all the tyres have been shredded away. At the back is a complete mobile
office and a direct line to the Vice President and the Pentagon. Oxygen tanks,
armor plated fuel tank, fire fighting system, night vision cameras and bottles
of the Presidents blood group all comes as standard.

An interesting tidbit: the U.S. flag and the presidential standard flown on
the front of the vehicle are illuminated by high-tech LED spotlights. A little
bling for the new African-American President please!
