Samsung's HDTV compliant DVD player does 1080p conversion, but fails to impress

With a jet black finish the DVD player has a bright LCD display on the front side, and a silver knob on the right. This silver knob can be used to control all the major functions of the player such as playback, navigation and selection. The power button on the left side that lit in a bright blue light during use gives the DVD player a funky look. The player comes with component as well as a HDMI cable, which is a welcome move as usually HDMI cables have to be bought separately. The remote control of the DVD player is slim and works great. We played a couple of DVD's, VCD's and audio CDs as well on the DVD player and it played them without any hassles. The HD upscaling worked great and even gave me a choice between 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions to select on as per my HDTV.

Packed with impressive looks, the DVD player disappointed me in terms of playback. It took over 1 min 30 sec to read a dual layer DVD, and over 45 sec to read a single movie DVD. When I tried to play a DVD with 5.1 DTS surround sound, it gave no sound output. In fact, the DVD player stopped responding once in between and I had to take out the power plug and put it back to make it work again. The menu software was sluggish, even when controlled by the control knob on the DVD player, and there is no USB jack to attach external USB storage devices for direct playback.

With so many issues at hand, the only advantage the DVD player offered me was its 1080p upscaling. There are alternatives from Philips and LG present in the market, which perform better and provide the same features at a lesser price.
