Mid-Range Beauty

Mid range DX 10 offering from ATI, with similar features as the stalwarts

L ike its elder brother ATI 2900 XT (reviewed July07), this latest mid range offering from ATI also boasts of several features. To start with, it has 120-stream processor along with a 128-bit of memory interface. It comes with a core clock speed of 800 MHz , memory clock speed of 1100 MHz and has a 256 MB of GDDR4 memory. That's not all, like ATI 2900 XT this one also comes integrated with HDMI output capabilities, with 5.1 surround sound, along with the additional support for Blu-ray, HD DVD HDCP and CrossFire. Reduced power consumption is a relief as it was a major drawback in the ATI 2900 series.

This card is not about features alone; it fares well on performance front too.

Be it a 3D Mark06 score or any of the gaming test, its performance was good. It outperformed 8600 GTS in our Doom 3 test with fps of 159 at max settings. Though in tests like FEAR, PRAY, we have seen better result with 8600 GTS. Performance in Half Life 2 Episode 1 was also satisfactory. If you are ready to compromise a bit on the resolution and use it under medium settings, then you are bound to get better performance. With all features that this card offers, it's a good buy for those looking for multimedia features and good gaming performance.
