Let's get Loud

The Nokia 5130 XpressMusic stands its ground with arguably one of the loudest sound outputs

Nokia's XpressMusic line of devices has been growing at a steady pace. The series boasts of amazing audio output and all of them come with 3.5mm audio jacks. With the 5130, Nokia has brought the XpressMusic to the budget conscious.

The 5130 comes in the two standard Xpress Music colors, red and blue. The phone is mostly plastic, but feels relatively solid. The build quality is excellent although I didn't really like the glossy finish on the front and the back. The numeric keypad is comfortable to use except the “*” and the “#” key as their size is smaller compared to the other keys. The phone even has dedicated music keys which definitely scores a point in terms of value for money.

The phone has a bright 2-inch display, but visibility gets affected a bit under direct sunlight due to the reflective glossy finish. Like its XpressMusic counterparts, the phone has superb audio clarity, this time coupled with an exceptionally loud speaker. The sound in the headphones is also impressive in terms of clarity and volume. The 3.5mm audio jack is on top of the device. This allows for easy usage of headphones when the phone is kept in a pocket. The radio reception is also excellent, although the idea of controlling it through the dedicated music keys won't find many takers.

The phone comes with a 2 MP camera which lacks both autofocus or flash of any kind. It's just good enough for occasional use since most images we clicked had high noise. The video recording is just 15 fps in QCIF resolution (176 x 144 pixels) which is disappointing. The battery holds up quite well and lasts for about 2 days.

The Nokia 5130 is a great device for people looking for a music-oriented phone with camera, expandable memory, 3.5mm audio out and decent battery backup. At the current market price of just under 6k, it offers great value for money. At the same price, you can also look at the Samsung S3500 or the Sony Ericsson G502.
