Samsung's “ touch of color” themed design, which essentially is adding hint
of red naturally blended into a sexy piano black frame, so far was visible on
their high-end products only. But now it seems to be spreading across all of
their devices. We first saw it on their LCD TV range, then it was their LCD
monitors and now they have added this feature to their latest notebook, the
R610.
As had been the case with all of their previous products, this one is also
looking gorgeous in its piano black finish.
Overall design is great. The 16” display has got a resolution of 1366 x 768
pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9 ratio; videos look just great on it. The
keyboard has great ergonomics and it even comes with a numeric keypad; you won't
find it in all the notebooks. Probably to make gamers happy, the arrow keys are
placed a bit lower than the rest of the keyboard.
This machine is powered by an Intel Core2Duo P7350 processor clocked at 2 GHz
and comes with 3 GB of DDR2 RAM, 320 GB HDD and nVidia 9200GS graphics with 512
MB of RAM. For connectivity, it comes with 4 USB ports, HDMI as well as VGA out,
Express card slot , 3-in-1 card reader, and includes a DVD writer too.
As it is more of a multimedia notebook, we played music and videos and were
pleased by the loud output of its onboard speakers. Samsung is not promoting
this one as a gaming notebook but it still is very much capable of running most
of the modern games with ease. Its score in 3DMark06 and PCMark05 benchmarks of
1767 and 4818 respectively is proof of that. In Windows Vista Home Premium, its
Windows Experience Index its score was 3.6, which implies adequate performance
The cooling system of the notebook is also good. The notebook didn't get
heated after long usage. Even during stress tests the CPU temperature didn't
rise beyond 70 degree and graphics card's temperature raised up to 66 degrees
only.
Thanks to its Centrino2 platform, the battery life is amazing. In the
Batterymark benchmark we got a battery life of 3 hours and 19 minutes which is
quite amazing. Weighing a mere 2.7 kg, the R610 undoubtedly is one of the
coolest 16-inch multimedia notebooks around.
