I've played and enjoyed a lot of refreshing interactive experiences over the
years, but I've simply never got my hands on anything as good or as unique as
Patapon. It's just one of those titles that just you can't, no matter how hard
you try, categorize under a suitable genre. The core of the gameplay experience
comprises of a mature blend of the most critical components from the RTS and
rhythm-based genres.
The playstyle manages to be simple and endearing at the same time. Players
select a mix of unit types, along with some hefty armor and weapons and rage
onto the battlefield to compete against their rival Zigaton army and other
monsters.
Instead of taking out the hordes with swords and arrows, the Patapon army
gathers itself with the help of a simple four-button command along with ranging
beats. And with the beats, the army carries out the actions by itself, allowing
you to plan your next move. What makes these chores so absorbing is the fact
that you're constantly forced to think one step ahead of the enemy. Selecting
the right weapons, making the right beats and moves, creating a balanced and
effective mix of attack and defense; there are plenty of actions to take.
Patapon packs in equal and highly entertaining dozes of everything.
